The Sedona Red Rock High School girls soccer team lost another tough one Tuesday, Jan. 17, as the Sand Devils from Page High School defeated the Scorpions, 1-0.

Jillian Bradshaw tries to take the ball from a Page High School player Tuesday, Jan. 17.It is the second straight heartbreaking loss for the Scorpions, who lost to Prescott High School on Jan. 10 in overtime, 3-2.

Against Page on Tuesday, the Sand Devil offense netted a goal midway through the second half for the only score of the match between the two teams.

“It just slipped by Sierra [Winters]. It deflected around and went in the goal,” fifth-year Sedona Head Coach Tom Cadigan said.

Junior goalkeeper Winters had eight saves Tuesday against Page, playing quite well according to Cadigan who made sure to say his team played a great match.

“We played well down the stretch. We came out sloppy to begin the game, but we picked up our play in the second half. We had so many chances, but we weren’t able to put one in the goal,” Cadigan said.

Sedona took 12 shots on the match, nine of which were on frame in the difficult 1-0 loss.

The Scorpions are currently 3-7 overall this season and with every loss, the chances for Sedona to make the state playoffs get slimmer and slimmer.

At the moment, Sedona is ranked No. 43 overall in the Division III Arizona Interscholastic Association power point poll, which was released Thursday, Jan. 19. The AIA takes only the top 16 for its Division III state playoffs.

Sedona is 1-6 in power point matches this season, and with three to go on the schedule, things are not looking good for Sedona.

If the Scorpions don’t make the state playoffs, it would be the first time in the history of the school for a Sedona girls soccer team to do so.

Sedona was in action Thursday when it traveled to Mingus Union High School. Results were unavailable at press time.

Next week, Sedona is scheduled to travel to Prescott High School on Tuesday, Jan. 24, and to Bradshaw Mountain High School on Thursday, Jan. 26. Both matches are scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

The Bradshaw Mountain match is the regular season finale for the Scorpions, and more than likely it will be the end of the 2011-2012 campaign.
