Food, fun and games abound at West Sedona School this weekend.

It will host its annual fundraising Wildcat Carnival Saturday, Oct. 14 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the school, 570 Posse Ground Road.

“We’ve upgraded the event this year,” said Melissa Schrader, president of West Sedona’s Parent Teacher Association and one of the carnival’s organizers. “It’s new and improved; we have bigger and better rides.”

The main event this year is a Nerf war sponsored by Summit Life; other new attractions include a swinging pirate ship and ballistic swing.

Returning favorites are the haunted classroom, sponsored by the Marine Corps League Sedona Detachment, and a Mexican food court. And of course the traditional carnival fare will be there: A giant inflatable slide and bouncy castle, bungee jumping, bean bag toss, golf putt and face painting.

A silent auction will entice carnival-goers to spend a little for the good of the school, in hopes of getting a little
something, too.

This year is the school’s biggest carnival yet, and the goal is to raise $50,000. While most of the money will go toward building a sunshade over one of the playgrounds, the money also is distributed in smaller ways: First-aid supplies for the nurse’s office or office supplies for the secretaries; and in the past, the PTA has written checks to reimburse teachers who spend money out-of-pocket on materials for their classrooms.

“Every little bit helps,” Schrader said. “I have high hopes for this year.”

West Sedona’s enlisted the help of its fellow public schools this year: Junior high students are volunteering at the carnival, the high school cheerleaders will perform with the West Sedona cheerleaders, and high school swim team members are subjecting themselves to the dunk tank.

After Scott Keller, West Sedona’s principal, is dunked, the high school swim coach A. Jay Bronson and several swimmers will get dunked, too, to help raise money for both the elementary school and the swim team.

“This carnival is not just a fundraiser for West,” Schrader said. “It’s a community building event.”

As a testament to that, several community organizations, even outside the local schools, will be present at the carnival. For more information or to buy game tickets online, visit
