With more than 3,500 registered runners, this year’s Sedona Marathon was the largest yet. Those numbers also equate to big bucks for many local businesses during one of the slowest times of the year.

Sedona Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jennifer Wesselhoff, who also serves as race director, said an estimated $3.2 million was spent in Sedona the week of the race.

This year, Valley Academy for Career and Technology Education Superintendent Bob Weir is responding directly to the Verde Valley’s lack of skilled construction employees.

Following a successful fall 2016 discussion with construction industry representatives in Cottonwood, Weir met with 17 plumbing, insulation, plastering and drywall, glass and general contracting professionals on Jan. 31 at the Camp Verde Community Library to evaluate the Verde Valley’s industry needs and endorse VACTE’s certification programs as means to train future employees.

In 1986 Bruce Hornsby was at the top of his game with a No. 1 song on the charts and with that the type of instant fame he could only have dreamed of.

Now, three decades and a trio of Grammy Awards later, Hornsby continues to perform an array of music including rock, bluegrass, folk, jazz and country. He and his band, the Noisemakers, will be bringing their style to the Sedona Performing Arts Center to kick off the 23rd annual Sedona International Film Festival. They will be performing at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18.

Opponents of a proposed self-storage facility in the middle of the Village won the battle but will likely lose the war.

The Yavapai County Board of Adjustment denied a request last month for a variance by Big Idea LLC, which was seeking permission to construct the facility with smaller setbacks than required by the county’s building code — 10 feet instead of 20 feet.

Those driving in and around Sedona on Saturday, Feb. 4, may want to consider alternate routes or expect possible delays — especially in the morning hours.

That’s because the Sedona Marathon, half-marathon, 10K and 5K event, which begins at 9 a.m., will include several road closures.

The course begins on Dry Creek Road from Sedona onto Boynton Canyon Road and then onto Boynton Pass Road and returns the same route. Throughout most of the morning hours and into the late afternoon there will be signs indicating that runners are on the roadway, that the speed limit is 15 mph and to be prepared to stop.

Nearly four out of 10 sophomores at Sedona Red Rock High School do not feel safe at school, according to a survey of Arizona high school students.

Just 62.5 percent of SRRHS 10th-graders said they feel safe when they go to school, compared to 77.4 percent of sophomores throughout Arizona. On the other hand, among SRRHS seniors, 85.2 percent feel safe at school, compared to 77.3 percent of seniors in the state.

Now in its 23rd year, the Sedona International Film Festival has continued to grow in popularity and size. And according to organizers, this year should be no exception.

“Things are coming along really well,” said Patrick Schweiss, who has served as executive director of the festival the last 13 years. “We’re at about 160 films from around the world and we just found out a few have been nominated for Academy Awards, so we’re very excited about that. And just yesterday we signed Robert DiNiro’s film, ‘The Comedian,’ which has an all-star cast.”

Crews from Sedona Fire District’s stations 3, 4 and 6 responded to a house fire on Monday, Jan. 30, in the Village of Oak Creek. Trucks arrived at 25 Creek Rock Circle within minutes to find the garage engulfed in flames.

The homeowners said they were home at the time of the fire and tried to put it out themselves, but the fire got out of control.
